Academic and operational activities in 110 Federal Government Colleges (unity schools), are at risk of disruption as the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the federal government over unresolved welfare issues.
The union accused the Ministry of Education of neglecting staff welfare concerns for over two years.
Key demands include separating junior and senior secondary schools to create directorate-level positions, paying transport and travel allowances for Federal Education Quality Assurance Service (FEQAS), staff, and reducing excessive medical fees under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
ASCSN Secretary General Joshua Apebo lamented the ministry’s refusal to address longstanding issues, including unpaid promotion arrears, displaced education officers’ compensation, and regularization of PTA teachers’ appointments.
The union also called for adherence to scholarship directives for education officers’ children and quarterly meetings with ministry officials.
The ultimatum, dated January 23, 2025, warns of industrial action if no resolution is reached, urging stakeholders to engage the ministry to avert disruptions in unity schools nationwide.
