Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed his appreciation for the Ifa tradition, emphasizing its significance in preserving Yoruba culture and heritage.
Speaking at an event, Obasanjo noted that despite being a Christian, he holds the Ifa divination system in high regard, describing it as a source of wisdom and intellectual development.
“Whoever says Ifa is nothing, I will say that person is a big fool. Before Christianity and Islam, we had Ifa, and it remains authentic,” he said.
The former president decried the diminishing value of Yoruba culture, particularly its language, food, and traditions, urging people to guard against its erosion.
“We must not joke with our culture. Yoruba is not vernacular; it is authentic,” he asserted.
Obasanjo commended renowned female talking drummer, Ara, for breaking cultural taboos, such as women playing the talking drum, and excelling in her craft.
“Ara has broken the taboo and done it very well. The lesson is that whatever you do, do it well,” he added.
Ara, who began playing the talking drum at the age of 10, thanked Obasanjo for his recognition and called on parents to take steps to preserve Yoruba traditions.
