On January 13, 2025, police were deployed to the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as factional secretaries Samuel Anyawu and Ude Okoye prepared to resume their roles amid an ongoing dispute over the National Secretary position.

A Court of Appeal ruling recognized Okoye as the legitimate holder of the office, but Anyawu continues to challenge the decision.

Tensions ran high at the headquarters, with supporters of both factions gathering.

Anyawu, who arrived to cheers from his supporters, proceeded to his office and called for prayers before addressing the media.

He confirmed that the case is pending before the Supreme Court and dismissed the PDP’s recent acknowledgment of Okoye as National Secretary as merely an opinion.

The conflict stems from Anyawu’s previous candidacy in the Imo State governorship election, which led to Okoye contesting his right to reclaim the position.

The court has sided with Okoye, and the PDP’s national working committee has officially recognized him as National Secretary.
