Plastic Ban: Shoprite Shoppers Adapt as Nylon Bags Disappear

A silent revolution is unfolding in Lagos malls; one where shoppers now navigate checkout lines without the familiar rustle of plastic bags.

Shoprite, Nigeria’s retail giant, has ceased providing nylon bags, aligning with the Lagos State Government’s ban on single-use plastics, which took effect on January 1, 2025.

At Shoprite’s Ikeja City Mall outlet, some customers struggled to adjust—juggling groceries in their arms, while others resorted to pushing carts all the way to their vehicles.

Those unprepared for the change either purchased reusable Bagco super sacks or simply stacked items directly into their trunks.

A public notice displayed at the store reinforced the policy:

“In support of the Lagos State Government’s ban on single-use plastics, we will no longer provide plastic straws, nylon bags, plastic cutlery, or Styrofoam packs. Let’s reduce plastic waste and protect our environment.”

Meanwhile, state officials have been monitoring compliance, ensuring that businesses adhere to the directive.

The ban on single-use plastics and Styrofoam packaging is part of a broader government initiative aimed at curbing plastic waste pollution across Lagos.

As the era of disposable plastics fades, one question lingers—will Lagosians fully embrace this shift, or will resistance persist in the face of convenience?
