A new alliance is forming in the battle against insecurity—one that wields not weapons, but words. Brigadier-General Babatunde Omopariola, Commander of the 17 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Katsina State, has urged journalists to embrace developmental journalism as a crucial tool in countering security threats.

Speaking at a strategic luncheon with members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Katsina State Council, Omopariola emphasized the power of the media in shaping public perception, influencing military operations, and garnering public support.

The event, held at the Command’s Officers’ Mess, was part of activities marking the 2025 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

“Journalists must be embedded in military operations to curb negative narratives that undermine security efforts.

“A strong media-military collaboration is essential in bridging the existing divide,” Omopariola declared.

Acknowledging the sacrifices of fallen heroes, he underscored the army’s commitment to the welfare of their families, urging the media to prioritize patriotic and security-conscious reporting.

In response, NUJ Chairman, Tukur Den-Ali, assured the military of unwavering media support, pledging that journalists in Katsina would stand as allies in the fight against insecurity, promoting interagency cooperation through responsible reporting.

As the war against insecurity rages on, the question remains: can the power of the press become a formidable weapon in Nigeria’s defense strategy?
