Despite the promise of Nigeria’s new Electricity Act to revolutionize power supply, a staggering 27 out of 36 states have failed to implement its provisions, leaving millions in the dark.

The Act, designed to decentralize electricity generation and distribution, has gained traction in only Edo, Oyo, Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, and Kogi, where laws have been enacted with NERC’s regulatory backing.

The rest remain stuck in bureaucratic limbo, delaying much-needed reforms.

Experts warn that political hesitations, funding gaps, and entrenched power agreements are stifling progress.

Meanwhile, the federal government scrambles to engage state leaders, pushing for swift adoption through seminars and stakeholder workshops.

As the nation grapples with persistent power shortages, the question lingers: Will these states act before Nigeria’s electricity crisis deepens beyond repair?
