Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, on January 9, 2025, welcomed his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Abuja for high-level talks aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation across critical sectors.
Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to its strategic partnership with China, referencing President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Beijing in September 2024, where four key Memoranda of Understanding were signed.
He assured that these agreements are progressing through various stages of implementation.
Wang Yi’s visit, his first official trip to Africa this year, signals China’s continued diplomatic and economic engagement with Nigeria. It builds on discussions from the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Summit, underscoring China’s intent to expand collaboration.
Arriving in Nigeria at 7:15 PM on Wednesday, Wang was received by Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, alongside Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai and other senior officials.
During his stay in Abuja, Wang Yi is set to hold crucial talks with top Nigerian officials, focusing on regional security, economic growth, and global strategic alliances.
His visit reaffirms China’s commitment to strengthening its bond with Nigeria while advancing development and stability in the region.
