The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has arrested seven suspects for vandalizing public infrastructure in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The arrests follow heightened concerns over the destruction of critical assets, including road manholes, armoured cables, and aluminium poles.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had earlier condemned the rising spate of vandalism, vowing that offenders would face the full weight of the law.

On Tuesday, FCT NSCDC Commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, announced the arrests after intensified surveillance operations.

Five suspects were apprehended around Constitution Avenue and Central Area, while two others were nabbed near the Presidential Villa.

Describing the act as “barbaric and evil,” Dr. Odumosu reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to curbing the menace.

“If they refuse to desist, we will continue to re-strategize until this ugly trend ends,” he said.

The suspects—Nafiu Ibrahim, Shefiu Sadiq, Yahaya Musbau, Mohanzam Muktar, Yunusa Ma’aruf, Haruna Yahaya, and Haliru Sanusi—were caught with stolen manhole covers, armoured cables, diggers, and two vehicles used for transportation.

Dr. Odumosu called for stricter regulation of pantaker markets, where stolen materials are sold, and urged the government to impose tougher penalties to deter vandalism.

He also appealed to FCT residents to support the NSCDC by providing credible intelligence to protect public infrastructure.
