The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has sealed a Chinese supermarket in Abuja for allegedly selling goods labeled exclusively in Chinese, violating Nigerian regulations.
The supermarket, located at Azba Mall, Wuse 2, was shut down on Monday following a tip-off.
NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Shaba Mohammed, stated that over 90% of the items lacked English translations, contrary to regulatory requirements.
He also noted that some expired products were still on display.
“The supermarket was sealed for violating NAFDAC regulations.
“We will investigate how these goods entered the country without proper labeling,” Mohammed said.
He emphasized that all products sold in Nigeria must have English labels to ensure consumer awareness.
The supermarket could face administrative sanctions if found culpable, with penalties imposed accordingly.
Mohammed also raised concerns about possible regulatory breaches in the importation process, stressing that NAFDAC would not have approved items labeled entirely in a foreign language.
NAFDAC urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any stores selling improperly labeled or expired products.
