7.1-magnitude earthquake struck a remote area of Tibet on January 7, 2025, killing at least 90 people and injuring around 130 others.

The earthquake, recorded at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers, occurred early Tuesday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter was near Shigatse, a culturally significant city and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, a key figure in Tibetan Buddhism.

Tremors were felt across Tibet, northern India, and other parts of the Himalayas.

This region, known for its high seismic activity, sits along the boundary of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

The USGS attributed the earthquake to normal faulting at a shallow depth.

Footage from China’s state broadcaster, CCTV, showed widespread destruction, including collapsed buildings and damaged homes.

Rescue teams have been deployed to search for survivors and provide essential aid.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered an extensive search-and-rescue operation to minimize casualties and assist displaced residents.
