Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that all individuals involved in the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed at least 35 children’s lives, will face prosecution regardless of their social or political status.
Speaking at the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service for state workers on Monday, Makinde dismissed calls for leniency, stressing that Oyo State will uphold the rule of law.
Responding to comparisons with similar incidents in Anambra State and the FCT, he insisted that Oyo would set a different precedent.
“Even if nobody is held accountable elsewhere, in Oyo State, the rule of law will prevail,” he stated, adding that while bail may be granted, the suspects must face trial.
Makinde also reflected on other challenges faced by the state in 2024, including the Bodija explosion and rising insecurity from bandit incursions.
He reassured residents of ongoing security operations to combat crime.
Additionally, the governor addressed concerns over pension adjustments, confirming ongoing discussions with pensioners following the minimum wage negotiations.
The event, attended by labour leaders, state workers, and community representatives, also featured commendations for Makinde’s commitment to worker welfare and governance.
