China is experiencing a sharp rise in respiratory illnesses, fueling concerns over a potential new viral outbreak.

Reports on January 4, 2025, indicate overcrowded hospitals and a renewed public reliance on face masks.

Social media is flooded with videos of packed hospital wards, where parents endure long waits with sick children.

Unverified claims also suggest crematoriums and funeral homes are struggling to meet demand, reminiscent of the early COVID-19 outbreak.

Local reports link the surge to human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a virus causing cold-like symptoms, though Chinese health authorities have not confirmed this as the source.

This outbreak mirrors the 2022/23 winter surge of mycoplasma pneumonia, or “white lung” disease, which affected children whose immune systems had weakened due to prolonged pandemic lockdowns and school closures.
