President Bola Tinubu has approved the reintroduction of History as a compulsory subject in primary and secondary schools, effective 2025.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced this during a year-end interview, highlighting the importance of reconnecting students with Nigeria’s heritage.
“We now have people who are 30 years old disconnected from our history; it doesn’t happen in any part of the world,” Alausa said, stressing the subject’s role in fostering national identity.
History was removed from Nigeria’s basic education curriculum in 2007, a move that has faced widespread criticism.
With President Tinubu’s directive, History will be reinstated across primary schools, Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), and secondary schools to strengthen the educational framework and promote a deeper understanding of Nigeria’s past.
