The University of Abuja has appointed Professor Aisha Maikudi as its new Vice-Chancellor, effective January 1, 2025.

The announcement, made on December 31, 2024, comes amid significant controversy over the selection process.

Critics have raised concerns about Maikudi’s qualifications, questioning whether she meets the experience requirements for such a senior academic role.

The appointment has also sparked internal divisions within the university’s governing council, with some members reportedly boycotting meetings related to the decision.

Professor Maikudi was selected following a competitive evaluation during an extraordinary council meeting, chaired by Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd).

She was chosen from a pool of ten candidates, following interviews conducted by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board.

Maikudi’s tenure is set for five years, with no option for renewal.
