The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), has raised an alarm over the potential disruption of telecom services if tariffs are not urgently reviewed.
In a statement on Monday, ALTON Chairman Gbenga Adebayo highlighted the industry’s struggle with soaring operational costs amid stagnant tariffs.
He cited rising energy prices, inflation, and fluctuating exchange rates as critical factors threatening the sector’s sustainability.
“As we conclude 2024, there is an urgent need for bold reforms to secure the future of our telecommunications industry.
“Tariffs must be adjusted to reflect the economic realities of service delivery,” Adebayo said.
He warned that failure to act could lead to service shedding, where operators may scale back services in certain areas or during specific periods, leaving millions disconnected.
Key sectors such as security, healthcare, commerce, and education, which depend heavily on telecom infrastructure, would face significant disruptions.
“This would stall economic growth and innovation, with far-reaching consequences for businesses and the national economy,” Adebayo cautioned.
While acknowledging that the challenges are longstanding, Adebayo emphasized that they have worsened significantly over the past year.
He urged stakeholders to act decisively to protect the industry, warning that inaction could endanger one of Nigeria’s critical development pillars.
“Let this be the moment we commit to safeguarding this vital sector,” he concluded.
