Olumayowa Akogun-Abudu, a military veteran and 2025 Ojo Local Government chairmanship aspirant, has alleged mismanagement of funds generated from the Nigerian Army emblem launch.
Speaking during a press briefing at his Ojo, Lagos residence on Thursday, December 26, 2024, Akogun-Abudu called for a federal investigation into the matter.
He accused authorities of diverting proceeds from the yearly emblem launch, which are meant to support ex-servicemen.
“These funds, intended to alleviate veterans’ struggles, are being misused, leaving many in hardship,” he lamented.
Akogun-Abudu also criticized the Nigerian Legion, led by Major General Abdulmalik Jubril (Rtd.), for allowing civilians with no military background to join its ranks, including participation in Armed Forces Remembrance Day activities.
He described this as a deviation from the organization’s purpose and called for urgent reforms to safeguard its integrity.
Additionally, he alleged interference by a retired Major General in the disbursement of veterans’ palliative funds, leading to delays, despite unresolved appeals to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.
“There must be accountability to ensure emblem funds serve their intended beneficiaries,” Akogun-Abudu stated, urging the government and defense headquarters to address these issues promptly.
