The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has dismissed recent terrorism allegations against Nigeria by Niger Republic as “unfounded.”
The accusations, made by Niger’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, claim Nigeria and other ECOWAS members are colluding with France to destabilize Niger.
Responding on Thursday, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, strongly denied the claims, stating they “exist solely in the realm of imagination.”
He emphasized that Nigeria has no alliance, overt or covert, with France or any other nation to destabilize Niger.
In its statement, ECOWAS expressed solidarity with Nigeria, lauding the country’s historic commitment to peace and security in West Africa.
It highlighted Nigeria’s leadership of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), and its contributions to combating regional threats.
ECOWAS firmly rejected the notion of Nigeria as a state sponsor of terrorism, describing the allegation as inconsistent with its role in regional stability.
The organization urged regional actors to prioritize dialogue and avoid baseless accusations.
