Oyo Sets ₦80,000 Minimum Wage, Leads in Workers’ Welfare

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has approved an 86% salary increase for state workers, raising the minimum wage to ₦80,000 and the monthly wage bill to ₦11.9 billion, effective January 2025.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, following a meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Chairman, Comrade Kayode Martins.

Martins praised Governor Makinde as a “Workers’ Governor” for his commitment to labor welfare, noting that Oyo’s new minimum wage surpasses federal and state benchmarks, reinforcing its leadership in worker-friendly policies.

Oyelade emphasized the governor’s dedication to balancing workers’ welfare with economic priorities, while Martins highlighted Oyo’s proactive approach, being the first state to implement the previous ₦30,000 minimum wage and negotiate the new rate ahead of federal approval.
