The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), alongside the FCT Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Agency, successfully rescued three men trapped in a blocked manhole in Abuja’s Guzape area of Asokoro District.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, acting Director-General Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed explained that two of the trapped men were laborers hired to clear debris obstructing the manhole leading to a central sewage system.

A buildup of trapped methane gas caused an explosion, resulting in their suffocation inside the manhole.

The third individual was a volunteer who became trapped while attempting to assist the laborers.

“One of the rescued men is receiving treatment at Wuse General Hospital, while the other two are at Asokoro District Hospital,” Mohammed reported.

He urged residents to leave the maintenance of public infrastructure to the appropriate government agencies and commended emergency responders for averting a potential tragedy.
