The department of FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has reported rescuing approximately 3,500 individuals from various emergencies in Abuja throughout 2024.

During a media briefing, Acting Director General Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed detailed the department’s response to disasters, including floods, building collapses, fire outbreaks, and road accidents.

Mohammed noted that 75 individuals were rescued from flood incidents, although one fatality occurred in Angwan Hakimi, Orozo.

In cases of building collapses, 105 people were rescued, with four fatalities reported in Guzape District, Kubwa, and Sabon Lugbe.

For fire incidents, the department successfully saved 1,230 lives without any fatalities, including major incidents at Old Karu Market and a fitness center in Gwarinpa.

He also addressed the FEMA’s response to an earth tremor affecting over 2,000 residents in Mpape, Katampe, and Maitama Extension, where 89 individuals were rescued and three fatalities were recorded.

Additionally, FEMA personnel successfully intervened in an attempted suicide atop a telecommunications mast in Katampe Hill, collaborating with police to ensure the individual’s safety.

Following the recent palliative stampede in Maitama, Mohammed confirmed that all hospitalized victims have now been discharged.

Looking ahead, Mohammed emphasized FEMA’s commitment to enhancing disaster preparedness and prevention.

“We plan to establish efficient channels for information sharing and secure data storage systems, while increasing our focus on risk assessment for the city center to mitigate potential disasters,” he stated.

FEMA has also launched its Ember Month Campaign, titled “Operation Eagle Eye,” in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps, aimed at promoting road safety awareness during the festive season.
