The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has praised the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), spearheaded by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for its transformative impact on elderly care in Nigeria.

Speaking at the scheme’s second edition in Abuja, Dr. Mahmoud highlighted its broader mission beyond material support, emphasizing its role in promoting community, compassion, and respect for the elderly.

“In our fast-paced world, it is crucial to pause and honor the pillars of our society—the elderly.

“Their wisdom and resilience have shaped our shared history, and even simple gestures can bring joy and a sense of belonging to those often overlooked,” she said.

Dr. Mahmoud lauded this year’s theme, “Total Wellness: Happiness, Healthy, and Prosperous Lifestyle,” as a testament to the initiative’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of senior citizens.

She urged stakeholders to sustain the scheme’s spirit throughout the year.

Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Olaniyi, Mandate Secretary for the Women Affairs Secretariat, announced that each beneficiary would receive ₦200,000, along with items like 25kg bags of rice, wheelchairs, and free medical screenings. “The beneficiaries will leave here happier, richer, and healthier,” she assured, expressing gratitude to the First Lady for her generosity.

The event culminated in the distribution of cash gifts and essential items to 250 elderly individuals, underscoring RHIESS’s dedication to improving lives and fostering inclusivity.
