Passengers narrowly escaped harm when a Warri-Itakpe train derailed late Sunday night at Okpara Station in Delta State’s Ethiope East Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred around 10 p.m., left passengers stranded overnight.
Eyewitnesses reported that while passengers sought refuge at the station, thieves took advantage of the situation to steal phones and valuables.
By Monday morning, many resorted to alternative transport to continue their journeys.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), spokesperson, Yakub Mahmood, confirmed the derailment, describing it as “minor.”
He stated that engineers were working to restore the track and assured the public that services would resume by Monday afternoon.
“We regret the inconvenience caused by this minor derailment,” Mahmood said.
The incident highlights the pressing need for improved rail infrastructure and security measures in Nigeria.
