The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that 22 people lost their lives in a tragic stampede during a rice distribution event in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, on Saturday.
Spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated that Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Obono Itam visited victims in the hospital, offering condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
“The Commissioner deeply regrets the loss of 22 lives and remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of Ndi Anambra,” Ikenga said.
The police are investigating the incident and pledged continued efforts in crime prevention and the protection of vulnerable populations.
