The Kwara State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the death of 35-year-old Jimoh Abdulquadri, who died in detention on December 20, 2024.
Jimoh, a resident of Balogun Fulani community in Ilorin, was arrested on December 19 for allegedly owing N220,000 to a man identified as Peter.
His family claims he was tortured in custody, resulting in his death.
Relatives, including his mother, Mrs. Adijat Moriyike, and elder brother Ismail, allege Jimoh was beaten by police officers, with reports of his head being struck with a hard object.
They said his body showed signs of trauma, including a bleeding nose.
The family stated that Jimoh was in the process of settling the debt before his arrest and had N350,000 and his phone with him at the time of detention.
They were informed the following morning that he was in critical condition and later found his body in the mortuary of Ilorin General Hospital.
They refuted police claims that he committed suicide, arguing the cell conditions made it implausible.
The family also alleged a possible cover-up, citing a connection between the creditor and a police officer, which they believe influenced Jimoh’s treatment.
Kwara State Police PRO DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed the incident, stating that a discreet investigation is underway to uncover the circumstances of the death.
She assured the public that updates would be provided as the inquiry progresses.
