The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has shut down eight rice shops and a warehouse in Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, for producing and distributing counterfeit rice.
Over 1,600 bags, valued at approximately ₦5 billion, were seized during the operation.
Led by NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the crackdown extended to Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja to safeguard public health during the festive season.
Investigations revealed the counterfeit rice was repackaged in branded bags such as Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aposo, with empty branded bags also found at the Karu facility.
Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, NAFDAC’s FCT Director, warned counterfeiters of strict legal consequences, stating, “Suspects apprehended during the raid will be prosecuted to deter others.”
NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of food products nationwide, especially during festive periods.
