A stampede during a rice-sharing event in Okija, Anambra State, has left several people feared dead, mostly women.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning.

Videos circulating on social media show lifeless bodies at the scene, while some victims have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Charles Aburime, Chief Press Secretary to Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, confirmed the incident, stating that the government is monitoring the situation and will issue a statement soon.

The tragedy follows a similar incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, where over 35 people, mostly children, died during a carnival stampede earlier this week.
