The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, on Thursday, granted bail of ₦500 million to Yahaya Bello, former Kogi State Governor, who faces trial over an alleged ₦10.4 billion fraud.
Justice MaryAnne Anenih ordered Bello to surrender his passport and restricted his travel outside Nigeria without court approval.
Bello, along with co-defendants Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalam Hudu, faces 16 charges, including conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and possession of unlawfully obtained property.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), arraigned the defendants on November 27, and all pleaded not guilty.
While Bello’s initial bail application was denied on December 10 for being premature, Oricha and Hudu were granted bail of ₦300 million each.
On Thursday, Bello’s counsel, J.B. Daudu (SAN), submitted a fresh bail application, which was approved with conditions.
The bail requires three sureties, each owning property in specified high-value areas of Abuja and collectively guaranteeing ₦500 million.
Sureties must provide property documents, passport photos, and identification.
Justice Anenih directed Bello to remain in the Kuje Correctional Facility until all bail conditions are met.
The court set January 29 and 30, 2024, for trial proceedings.
