Boko Haram insurgents have intensified their grip on Niger State, killing three people and injuring four others in a series of improvised explosive device (IED), attacks in the Shiroro Local Government Area.
In a chilling incident on Thursday, three siblings from Bassa village encountered an IED on their way to the farm.
The blast left one sibling with an amputated leg and injured two others.
Later that day, a bread seller on a motorcycle was killed by another IED while trying to assist the injured, with a rescuer also sustaining injuries.
The insurgents, reportedly camping in the Maganda and Kugu axes of the Allawa forest reserve, have planted at least six explosives in the area since February.
These attacks forced the military to withdraw troops from the Allawa garrison, leaving residents vulnerable to continued violence.
The Allawa forest reserve links terror-stricken areas in Kaduna and Zamfara states, allowing insurgents to launch attacks on civilians, security personnel, and local vigilantes.
Despite repeated alarms, including a 2021 warning of a Boko Haram flag hoisted in Kaure village, little progress has been made in curbing the group’s activities.
Efforts to reach the Niger State Commissioner for Homeland Security for comment yielded no response at press time.
Meanwhile, locals continue to live in fear as the insurgents tighten their grip on the region.
