Dr. Fabian Osita, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, was shot dead on Monday night by suspected car snatchers near the high-tension area in Aroma, Awka.
The assailants reportedly intercepted Dr. Osita’s Toyota Corolla as he was driving home and attempted to steal the car.
Witnesses said the lecturer resisted and was shot in the head. The attackers fled with his vehicle, leaving his lifeless body at the scene.
UNIZIK’s Chief Security Officer, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed the incident, which occurred around 7:30 p.m.
The university community is in mourning over the loss of the Business Department lecturer.
In response to rising insecurity, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), at UNIZIK is mobilizing to protest at the Government House in Awka.
Anambra State Police Command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the murder and said investigations are ongoing.
The police are seeking information to identify the perpetrators and recover the stolen vehicle, a 2006 ash-colored Toyota Corolla with an Enugu plate number.
Authorities urge anyone with relevant information or sightings of the vehicle to report to the nearest police station.
