Nigeria has fully settled its financial obligations to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the first time in 19 years, paying ₦84 billion and $54 million.
The payment, covering contributions from 2023 through July 2024, was announced by ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Touray during an event in Abuja on Sunday, December 15, 2024.
Dr. Touray commended the move as a testament to Nigeria’s leadership and commitment to regional development under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“This 100% settlement underscores Nigeria’s confidence in ECOWAS. It is a testament to the leadership of President Tinubu and strengthens our shared vision for regional development,” he said.
The milestone payment, finalized on December 13, reflects Nigeria’s dedication to bolstering ECOWAS initiatives amid the region’s pressing challenges.
