A collision involving a J5 Ford bus and a Mercedes truck occurred Monday morning at Ilubirin, inward Sura, on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge, leaving one person dead and four injured.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed the incident through its Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to the statement, the J5 bus, loaded with pepper and perishable goods, suffered a brake failure, resulting in the crash.
LASTMA officials, led by General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, conducted rescue operations alongside bystanders, rescuing four victims.
Sadly, one passenger trapped in the bus died from injuries sustained. Survivors were rushed to Lagos Island General Hospital for emergency treatment.
Emergency response teams, including LASEMA, FRSC, and the Nigerian Police, collaborated with LASTMA to clear the wreckage and restore traffic, which had extended to the Unilag waterfront.
In his statement, Bakare-Oki conveyed condolences to the victim’s family and stressed the importance of vehicle maintenance and safe driving, particularly during the festive season.
The incident underscores the need for heightened road safety awareness among motorists, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles.
