Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have announced plans to leave the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), between January and July 2025, according to ECOWAS Commission President Alieu Touray.
Speaking at the 66th Ordinary Session of Heads of State and Government in Abuja on Sunday, Touray confirmed that while mediations continue, the trio has described their decision as “irreversible.”
The military-led governments of these nations accused ECOWAS of favoring France’s interests and decided to withdraw following suspensions and sanctions imposed after recent coups.
Despite diplomatic efforts, the countries are committed to charting an independent course for their citizens.
The development underscores growing challenges to regional unity amid escalating tensions.
