The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has dismissed rumors circulating on social media about the alleged death of its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

In an official statement, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, clarified that Prof. Yakubu is in good health and has not traveled to London in the past two years.

The rumors, which surfaced on December 9, 2024, claimed that Prof. Yakubu died in a London hospital after a brief illness.

However, Oyekanmi debunked the reports, describing them as baseless and urging the public to disregard them.

“Our attention has been drawn to a fake news narrative circulated by a section of the social media claiming the purported death of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu at a London hospital.

We hereby appeal to the public to disregard the rumor. Prof. Yakubu is alive, hale, and hearty,” the statement read.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and called for caution against the spread of misinformation.
