Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed the Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Bill into law, targeting illegal organ harvesting.
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, announced this during a press briefing in Ikeja on December 13, 2024.
The law bans unauthorized organ harvesting, unethical medical practices, and advertisements promoting organ sales.
Violators face penalties of up to 10 years imprisonment or ₦10 million in fines.
The legislation ensures ethical standards in medical procedures while protecting residents from exploitation.
Pedro also highlighted four additional laws aimed at improving public welfare: the Consumer Protection Law, Lagos Enforcement Training Institute regulations, Victims Assistance and Witness Protection Law, and Fire and Rescue Service Law.
The Consumer Protection Law empowers residents to hold businesses accountable, with penalties for violations reaching ₦5 million or six months in prison.
Pedro urged Lagosians to embrace and enforce these laws, emphasizing the government’s commitment to security, justice, and progress.
