Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State announced that all 36 states have endorsed the creation of state police, following submissions made to the National Economic Council (NEC).
He disclosed this after the 147th NEC meeting chaired by Vice-President Kashim Shettima in Abuja.
Sani highlighted the increasing insecurity across states and the insufficient number of security personnel as reasons for the widespread support.
He described state police as a necessary step to address ungoverned territories and security challenges nationwide.
“Virtually every state has security challenges, and most of us agree that establishing state police is the way forward,” Sani said.
Discussions on state police were, however, postponed to the next NEC meeting in January 2025 to allow for further stakeholder engagements and a comprehensive report from the NEC secretariat.
The NEC had earlier mandated Kwara, Adamawa, Kebbi, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to submit their positions on state police by November 28, following submissions from 33 other states.
The consolidated report will guide the council’s next deliberation.
