The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), has unveiled a national housing strategy to address Nigeria’s housing deficit, estimated at 17 to 20 million units.

Chairman Samson Opaluwah announced the proposal at CORBON’s 35th-anniversary event in Abuja.

Key aspects of the plan include developing local building materials, reorganizing marketing systems to ensure quality and accessibility, and enhancing training for building professionals and artisans. Opaluwah stressed the importance of skilled personnel in meeting housing demands and highlighted the construction sector’s role in economic growth, noting it ranks among Nigeria’s top employers.

CORBON also proposed a responsive social housing program for vulnerable groups and called for a review of land access systems to promote equity.

Additionally, the council introduced initiatives like the Builders Management Portal (BuMaP), to verify builder credentials and a disciplinary tribunal to curb building collapses.

Collaborating with COREN, CORBON aims to strengthen building control frameworks and ensure adherence to standards.

Opaluwah emphasized the need for stricter regulation enforcement, modern construction techniques, and improved supervision to reduce youth unemployment, prevent substandard projects, and close the housing gap.
