The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to develop home-grown technology to effectively combat the nation’s escalating security challenges.
He warned that continued reliance on foreign technology is hindering the Nigerian Army’s capacity to address critical threats.
Represented by Major General Adeleke Ayannuga, Commander of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, Lt-Gen Oluyede made this call during a one-day seminar in Abuja.
Organized by the Department of Army Transformation and Innovation, the seminar focused on the theme, “Leveraging Home-grown Technological Solutions in Support of Nigerian Army Operations.
“Nigeria has faced unprecedented security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, urban crimes, and separatist agitations.
“These threats have resulted in devastating loss of lives, displacement of communities, and disruption of economic activities,” he noted.
The COAS stressed that despite significant investments and efforts, the persistence of insecurity calls for a transformative approach.
“The complexity and evolving nature of these threats demand solutions that are adaptive, innovative, and homegrown,” he stated.
He described home-grown technology as more than a tool but a symbol of technological independence and national pride.
“By embracing domestic solutions, we foster a sense of ownership and bolster our nation’s self-reliance in tackling security issues,” he added.
Lt-Gen Oluyede further noted that relying on foreign technologies limits the Army’s flexibility and strategic potential.
He urged stakeholders to prioritize collaborations and investments in local innovations, which he believes will equip the Nigerian Army with the capacity to address insecurity effectively and independently.
The seminar provided a platform for the Army to explore practical strategies to harness local technological expertise, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring security and stability across the nation.
