The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), has commenced an in-depth investigation into a grave midair incident involving a Fly Bird HS 125 aircraft (registration 5N-KAL), which suffered dual engine failure during a flight from Abuja to Accra on December 6, 2024.
The aircraft, with three crew members and one passenger onboard, departed from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, bound for Kotoka International Airport, Accra.
Trouble began when Engine No. 2 malfunctioned as the plane climbed through flight level 240, approximately 25 nautical miles southwest of VOR station VONUK at 17:54 UTC.
Following the incident, the crew requested to return to Abuja and began their descent.
However, Engine No. 1 failed at about 5,000 feet as the aircraft neared Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
A Mayday alert was issued, but the crew managed an emergency landing at 18:16 UTC, averting a disaster. No injuries were reported.
Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, confirmed that investigators are examining flight data, maintenance records, and conducting interviews to determine the root cause of the engine failures.
“This investigation is crucial for preventing future incidents and improving aviation safety,” Oladeji stated, assuring that updates will be shared as findings emerge.
