BAOBAB, a prominent women’s rights advocacy group, has raised concerns over the systemic exclusion of women from Nigeria’s political arena.
Speaking at a gathering in Abuja on December 3, 2024, BAOBAB’s Executive Director Yeye Bunmi Dipo-Salami lamented the deliberate obstacles hindering women’s political participation, including violence, intimidation, and emotional oppression.
“It is becoming more obvious that women are not wanted in Nigeria’s political space,” she stated, citing cases like the gruesome murder of a female politician in Kogi State and other acts of gender-based violence.
She called for urgent action, urging women to rise above distractions and assert their rights in the political sphere.
The event, which brought together women leaders from across the FCT, also launched a 16-day activism campaign against violence targeting women in politics, advocating for the domestication of the Maputo Protocol to end these injustices.
Key speakers, including former Ekiti State House Speaker Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Adelugba, emphasized the need for legislative reforms to secure women’s representation and protection in politics.
Participants resolved to use the National Assembly to push for bills that ensure women’s emancipation from oppression and inequality in governance.
BAOBAB’s rallying call is a bold step toward dismantling systemic barriers and fostering inclusive leadership in Nigeria.
