The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability, describing these principles as the bedrock of public trust and community safety.
Speaking at the National Summit on Police Accountability in Abuja on December 3, 2024, Egbetokun called for collaboration among stakeholders to build a more trustworthy law enforcement system.
He highlighted reforms under his leadership, which focus on enhancing internal oversight and public engagement.
These include expanding the Complaint Response Unit and restructuring the IGP Monitoring Unit.
Egbetokun also announced plans to standardize forensic processes, a move aimed at bolstering criminal investigations and prosecutions.
The initiative, developed in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), underscores the police’s commitment to employing advanced techniques to combat modern criminal activities effectively.
The summit was attended by key figures, including Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, represented by Mrs. Bolanle Aderenle; DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (Rtd), Chairman of the Police Service Commission; and Mr. Cheikh Ousmane Toure of UNODC.
Egbetokun stressed the importance of citizen involvement in promoting accountability, urging Nigerians to engage actively in the process.
He maintained that an inclusive approach is crucial for bridging the gap between law enforcement and the public.
The IGP reaffirmed the police’s mission to uphold justice and equity, expressing confidence in transforming the force into a world-class institution trusted by all Nigerians.
