The Anambra State Police Command has successfully foiled a kidnapping attempt along the Agulu/Nnobi Road, leaving one suspect dead and others fleeing with gunshot injuries.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed in a statement on Saturday that operatives assigned to protect a VIP repelled an attack by armed assailants believed to be affiliated with a secessionist group.

“At around 8:30 pm on November 29, 2024, police operatives from the Operations Department encountered the criminals along Agulu/Nnobi Road.

“One suspect was neutralized, and a cache of items was recovered, including a pump-action rifle, five live cartridges, five machetes, two SUVs, and two pairs of desert boots,” Ikenga explained.

The attackers, driving a grey Lexus ES 330 with the license plate ACA 551 MA and an ash-colored Toyota Highlander with plate number SMK 544, launched an unprovoked assault on the police convoy.

However, a swift response by a Joint Security Team, comprising police and Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG), operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer from Neni, forced the suspects to abandon their vehicles and escape into the surrounding bushes.

Law enforcement operations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

SP Ikenga urged members of the public to assist by providing any information that could aid the police in their efforts.

However, Richard Inoyo, a civil society leader, dismissed the endorsement, arguing that the caucus does not represent the people’s will.

Meanwhile, speculation is growing that Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong may challenge Otu in 2027, with his expanding free transport scheme seen as a strategic move.
