Akai Egwuonwu, a renowned businessman and Life Patron of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has formally announced his candidacy for the Anambra South senatorial district rerun election.

Egwuonwu declared his intention on Sunday at his country home in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area.

The bye-election seeks to fill the seat left vacant by the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away in July.

Egwuonwu urged APGA members and stakeholders to rally behind his bid, pledging to sustain Ubah’s legacy, particularly in addressing the region’s security challenges.

Outlining his agenda, Egwuonwu highlighted three key priorities: combating insecurity, supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), with grants, and championing legislative measures to safeguard the interests of the constituency.

He emphasized his vision to empower SMEs with affordable funding options, a critical step toward economic revitalization in the region.

The declaration ceremony drew prominent APGA figures, including Board of Trustees member Maja Umeh and former lawmakers Egwuoyibo Okoye and Kingsley Iruba.

Egwuonwu’s entry into the race has heightened anticipation for the APGA primaries, as party members and constituents await the next steps in this closely watched contest.
