Civil servants in Rivers State have reason to celebrate as Governor Sim Fubara delivers on his promise to raise the minimum wage to ₦85,000.
This move, which significantly boosts workers’ earnings, was confirmed on November 27, 2024, by Chukwuma Osunna, Chairman of the Nigeria Civil Service Union, Rivers State Chapter.
Osunna, speaking to reporters, expressed satisfaction with the wage adjustment, saying, “The Governor has fulfilled his promise.
The ₦85,000 minimum wage has been included in the November salaries, and workers are happy. We reviewed the salary chart with the Head of Service, and the calculation is accurate.”
The payment began immediately, with most banks expected to complete the disbursements by November 28.
This wage hike comes in the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s approval of a ₦70,000 national minimum wage in July, but Fubara’s decision to go beyond that figure highlights his commitment to the welfare of Rivers State workers.
Citing the state’s robust Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Governor Fubara assured that the ₦85,000 wage increase is sustainable.
This progressive step marks a significant achievement for civil servants, who have widely welcomed the improvement to their livelihoods.
