The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken a groundbreaking step to enhance agricultural productivity by approving a contract for the procurement of essential inputs to support dry-season farming.
The FCT Executive Council has sanctioned the purchase of 250 metric tonnes of NPK fertilizer, 300 metric tonnes of urea, 310 knapsack sprayers, and 3,500 litres of liquid fertilizer.
This marks the first time the FCTA is investing in dry-season farming, a move expected to revolutionize farming practices in the territory.
Lawan Geidam, Mandate Secretary of the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, highlighted that the initiative is designed to assist irrigation farmers, enabling year-round agricultural production and reducing reliance on rain-fed farming.
“This intervention will contribute significantly to the food security of the FCT population,” Geidam said.
The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader strategy to promote dry-season farming across Nigeria.
Recently, the government announced a 50% subsidy on agricultural inputs for farmers, further incentivizing the shift toward irrigation-based agriculture.
By providing critical support to farmers, the FCTA aims to bolster food production, improve livelihoods, and enhance agricultural resilience in the face of climate variability.
This effort underscores the administration’s commitment to fostering sustainable farming practices in the Federal Capital Territory.
