As Nigeria grapples with economic hardship, insecurity, and growing despair, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His Grace Most Rev. Ignatius A. Kaigama has called on political leaders to focus on policies that genuinely alleviate the suffering of the populace.

Speaking at the opening session of the 5th Annual General Assembly of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, held at the Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles, Karsana, Archbishop Kaigama challenged politicians to prioritize socio-economic development over personal interests.

Amid a gathering of clergy, laity, and distinguished guests, including the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, Kaigama lamented the harsh realities confronting Nigerians.

“In the face of hunger, poverty, and insecurity, politicians must be champions of genuine change,” he said.

He urged lawmakers and government officials to enact motions that address issues such as deteriorating infrastructure, high living costs, and rampant violence caused by kidnappers, militant herdsmen, and bandits.

Highlighting the Church’s role in societal transformation, Kaigama underscored the importance of practical Christianity, calling Catholics in politics and business to join the Church’s missionary drive.

He appealed for support in building pastoral areas and providing resources for underserved communities. “We are not as rich as people think,” he remarked, dispelling misconceptions about the Church’s wealth in the Federal Capital Territory.

Kaigama’s address, which also emphasized deepening Catholic identity and spirituality, resonated with the event’s theme: ‘Deepening Our Catholic Identity and Spirituality in the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja’.

He urged Catholics to embrace practices such as daily prayer, Eucharistic devotion, and a life of integrity, asserting that faith must inspire societal impact.

The Archbishop’s message comes as the Archdiocese prepares to conclude the assembly with the consecration of the Archdiocese to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the ordination of 14 deacons.

It serves as a clarion call to both spiritual and political leaders to champion the common good in the face of Nigeria’s ongoing challenges.
