The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), has issued a stern warning of an impending nationwide shutdown, set to commence on December 2, 2024, unless the federal government addresses its unresolved demands.
The union’s ultimatum, which expired without action from the government, has left ASUP with no choice but to escalate the situation.
In a statement released by Comrade Engr. Abubakar J. Abdullahi, the Chairman of ASUP at Kaduna Polytechnic, the union expressed deep frustration with the government’s lack of response.
“Regrettably, as we passed the deadline of this ultimatum, we are yet to see the necessary actions from the Federal Government to address these pressing demands,” Abdullahi said.
He added that the continued silence and inaction left the union with no other option but to consider a total shutdown of polytechnics across the country.
The union’s demands include the release of the second tranche of the NEEDS Assessment Intervention fund, the implementation of the agreed 25/35% salary review with accrued arrears, and the resolution of the CONTISS-15 migration arrears.
ASUP also cited unpaid allowances, promotion arrears, and inadequate funding, along with the delayed release of the Scheme of Service and Conditions of Service for polytechnic staff, as major points of contention.
While acknowledging the potential disruption to students’ academic progress, Abdullahi emphasized that the long-term survival and quality of the nation’s educational system depend on the government’s commitment to addressing these systemic issues.
“The survival and quality of our educational system hinges upon the government’s responsiveness to our needs,” he said.
ASUP has urged the federal government to initiate urgent and meaningful dialogue to prevent the looming shutdown, warning that failure to do so would disrupt polytechnic education nationwide.
The union remains steadfast in its determination to secure lasting solutions to the challenges facing polytechnic institutions in the country.
