President Bola Tinubu has praised the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), for the successful revitalization of the Port Harcourt Refinery and urged for the rapid reactivation of the Warri and Kaduna refineries.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized the urgency of rehabilitating the second Port Harcourt refinery and other facilities to strengthen Nigeria’s energy security and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.
The President acknowledged former President Muhammadu Buhari’s role in initiating the refineries’ rehabilitation and commended NNPCL’s Group CEO, Mele Kyari, for overcoming significant operational challenges.
The Port Harcourt Refinery’s $1.5 billion rehabilitation, funded by the African Export-Import Bank, has restored its capacity to process 210,000 barrels of crude oil daily.
The refinery is expected to begin supplying the local market with petroleum products by November 26, 2024.
Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to achieving energy sufficiency and positioning Nigeria as a leading energy hub.
He also stressed the importance of accountability in rebuilding national infrastructure as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
