The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) has certified Kwali Central Ward as open defecation-free, marking a major milestone in public health.

The announcement came during a World Toilet Day event at the Etsu of Kwali’s Palace, themed “Toilet for Peace.”

Aisha Bakpo, Director of Sanitation in Kwali Area Council, commended the collaborative efforts of RUWASSA and local stakeholders over the past two years.

She revealed plans to extend awareness campaigns across Kwali’s remaining nine wards, urging residents to construct and use household toilets.

“We have engaged local youth to educate the community on the dangers of open defecation, empowering them economically while improving public health,” Bakpo said.

Traditional rulers, community leaders, and representatives from UNICEF and CAN pledged to intensify advocacy for improved sanitation practices.

Suzanne George of UNICEF appealed for collective action, emphasizing the role of traditional leaders in driving change.

The event featured awards for individuals and groups who contributed to the sanitation campaign, further highlighting Kwali’s commitment to a healthier, cleaner environment.

With this certification, Kwali Central sets an example for other communities in the fight against open defecation.
