The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to produce accurate, verifiable data on Nigeria’s housing deficit and enhance access to affordable housing.

The motion, presented during Tuesday’s plenary by Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, representing Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, stressed the importance of reliable data for crafting effective housing policies.

Ukpong-Udo referenced the World Population Review’s report, which states that over 24 million Nigerians are homeless, positioning the country among the top 10 nations with the highest homeless populations.

The House expressed concern over the nation’s dependence on foreign sources, such as the World Bank, for housing statistics, underscoring the need for domestic data to inform sustainable housing solutions.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas instructed the Committee on Housing and Habitat to work with the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to bridge the data gap and ensure Nigerians have access to affordable, decent housing.
