Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, Nigeria’s oldest Catholic priest, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 104.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor described Monsignor Oleghe as a shining example of humility, sacrifice, and service, whose remarkable life offered lessons of dedication and faith.
Governor Okpebholo lauded the late priest’s profound impact on the lives of many and extended heartfelt condolences to his family, the Catholic community in Edo State, and particularly the Auchi Diocese.
“Fr. Oleghe, a son of Igiode in Agenebode, Edo State, lived an exemplary life of fulfillment and devotion. His fatherly counsel and the countless lives he touched will never be forgotten.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Edo State, I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and the Catholic Church. May his soul find eternal rest,” the governor prayed.
Bishop Gabriel Dunia of the Auchi Diocese confirmed Monsignor Oleghe’s passing in a statement, revealing that the priest died at 2:30 am on Sunday, November 24, 2024. He further announced that the funeral would be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
“With gratitude to God for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria, at the age of 104,” the Bishop said. “May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. We will celebrate his funeral on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.”
Monsignor Oleghe, a native of Igiode, was widely revered for his unwavering faith and dedication to his ministry.
His death marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in the history of the Catholic Church in Nigeria, leaving behind a legacy of selfless service and devotion to God and humanity.
